Homelab Notes: What I Want This Lab to Become
Goals for networking, automation, local AI, storage, monitoring, and documentation.
A homelab can become a pile of services very quickly. The useful version needs a map.
The first goal is documentation: what runs where, what depends on what, what is exposed, what is backed up, and what should be left alone.
The second goal is repeatability. If a service moves, breaks, or gets rebuilt, the notes should make the next pass faster.
Areas to build out
- Network overview and addressing.
- Servers, storage, and shares.
- Docker containers and reverse proxy routes.
- AI and local LLM stack.
- Monitoring and alerting.
- Backup and restore tests.
- Future plans that can wait their turn.
The lab should be useful, not theatrical. If a service cannot be explained clearly, it probably needs a better note or a simpler setup.
